Charles LeVern Pressley I , affectionately known as Vern, was born on February 23, 1949 to the late Benny Pressley Sr. and Della B. Landy in Kingstree, SC. Vern was educated in the Williamsburg County School District. In 1968, he was drafted in the United States Army and was part of the 82nd Airborne Division out of Fayetteville,NC. From Fayetteville, he transferred with the Airborne Division in 1969 to Japan. While he was in Japan, he was on the U.S. Army boxing team. He had 7 matches and won 4 out of 7, and one of those matches was in Korea. Then he completed his contract in 1971.Vern then reenlisted into the 1st/111th HHC 28th Infantry Division Pennsylvania Army National Guard in 1976. There he became the medical platoon leader. He was a 2nd Lieutenant and then was promoted to 1st Lieutenant where he became the Executive Officer (XO) of A Company 28th ID. Vern was then transferred to the Mortar platoon where he served as the platoon leader for 2 more years. Overall, he served the military for a total of 18 years and received the Army Service Ribbon, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, and received an Honorable Discharged as a Captain.
In 1972, Vern was united in marriage to Tryphosa Davis, and moved to Philadelphia, PA. From this union, 2 children were born. While in Philadelphia, he attended the Franklin School of Science and Arts and received an Associate's Degree. Vern worked at Misericordia Hospital as a medical technician and in the blood bank lab. He then worked at American Eagle as an independent contractor for several years.
Later in life, Vern moved back to South Carolina and primarily worked in the manufacturing industry. He later remarried to Deborah Robinson. He spent the last 10 years at Concrete Pipe and Precast where he eventually retired at 76 years old and they affectionately called him Chucky P.
Vern was called to eternal rest on Sunday, April 12, 2026. Before entering into eternal rest, he confirmed his faith and stated he was saved and sanctified. He was preceded in death by his older brother, Benny Pressley, Jr. of Kingstree, SC. He leaves to cherish in his memory, his wife Deborah Pressley; his 2 children, Charles L. Pressley II (Carine) of Philadelphia, PA, Erica Berry (James) of Gastonia, NC; 7 grandchildren Moneisha, Sarah,Hannah, Jordyn, Rachel, Morgan, and Bryson; 1 great-grandson, Noah; 2 brothers, Leonard Pressley (Gail) of Kingstree, SC, Isaac Pressley (Stacey) of Levittown PA and 1 sister Zella Gordon of Philadelphia, PA; 2 uncles James L. Barr of Kingstree, SC, Henry Williams of Henderson, NC; loving nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and church members.
