Life Reflections

Reverend Eugene Segres, Jr. affectionally called "Bubba," by family and friends, was born on April 27, 1944, to the late Rev. Eugene Segres, Sr. and Mrs. Virginia McClary Segres. He departed this life on Sunday morning October 1, 2023, at his home in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

He was educated in the Williamsburg Public School System and a proud graduate of Tomlinson High School where he played the trombone in the marching band and developed a love for music that continued to grow throughout his life. He was especially fond of County Gospel, Bluegrass Gospel, Southern Gospel, and gospel music by Charley Pride. He was raised in the church with a strong spiritual foundation and in 1963 accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior.

On September 7, 1963, he married Gertie Loretta Dukes, of Kingstree, SC and to this union was born five children: Ethel Marie, who preceded him in death, Abraham, Danzell, Angela, and Ruth Naomi.

He had strong work ethic and was a professional electrician. He was also a handyman and a "mister fix-it". His work background is varied; there was no job too small or too large for him. As a young man, he worked at the Coca-Cola plant pushing coke" as he often told the story. He worked in a flower shop, at construction sites, at electrical plants, and at a bakery.

In 1964, he accepted his call into ministry and over many years served faithfully in the choir, in the band as a trombonist, and as the youth leader at Mt Zion Apostolic Faith Church, in the Holywoods, Kingstree, South Carolina.

In 1980, he was appointed as the pastor of the Apostolic Faith Church, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina where he relocated with his family and served for eighteen years. Under his leadership, the ministry grew both spiritually and physically. They remodeled the church, expanded the community outreach ministry, started a radio and prison ministry, purchased vehicles (The Big Blue Bus), and became the visible hands and feet in the South Rocky Mount community.

It was also in Rocky Mount that Rev. Eugene and Sis. Gertie entered into the Foster Parenting ministry. This ministry continued for over thirty years and ended in Houston Texas. During the time of this ministry, they were privileged to be foster and "adopted" parents for many other children and adults!

In 1997, he was called to serve as pastor of the Apostolic Faith Church (Reed Road), in Houston, Texas where he served faithfully for twelve years. Again, he had the vision to expand and remodel the physical building. He championed the saints at Reed Road and they erected and completed the fellowship hall and remodeled the sanctuary.

In 1997, he was called to serve as pastor of the Apostolic Fatth Church (Reed Road), in Houston, Texas where he served faithfully for welve years. Again, he had the vision to expand and remodel the physical bullding. He championed the saints at Reed Road and they erected and completed the fellowship hall and remodeled the sanctuary.

In 2008, he was called to serve as pastor of the Apostolic Faith Church (265 Layette Avenue), Brooklyn, New York where he served for five years. He spearheaded the purchase of a new church van and used his knowledge and skills in construction to help renovate and beautify the church building.

in 2009, he was appointed as the District Superintendent of the Southern and Eastern Districts of the Apostolic Faith Churches. His jurisdictional oversite of more than twenty churches expanded from Massachusetts to Florida to Texas. With his strong faith in God, love for people, and a desire to serve, his ministry expanded throughout the United States and internationally in places like Canada, Haiti, and the Caribbean Islands. He and Sis. Gertie loved to meet people and truly counted it a blessing to be a part of the larger family of God.

In 2012, he returned home to Kingstree South Carolina to serve as the pastor of his childhood family church: Mount Zion Apostolic Faith Church (Holy Woods Community).

In 2019, after serving for almost forty years in ministry Reverend Eugene retired as the District Superintendent and Pastor of Mi. Zion Apostolic Faith Church Holywoods Community Kingstree, South Carolina. He and Sis. Gertie relocated back to Rocky Mount, North Carolina where he raised his beloved rabbits and chickens.
