Noland
July 5, 1950 – September 16, 2024
Life Reflections
Eugene Noland, a dedicated husband, father, brother, and friend to many, passed away on September 16, 2024, at the age of 74 in Florence, South Carolina, while bravely battling cancer. He was and always will be immensely treasured.
Eugene was born on July 5, 1950, in Trenton, Florida, to the late Mary and Archie Noland. He graduated from John C. Morse High School, known back then as Trenton Negro High School. While in high school, he attended the Lincoln University Upward Bound Program, where he grew fond of Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Upon graduation, Eugene had three options to attend college: Lincoln University,
Virginia Union, and Wilberforce University. While all three institutions were reputable, he ended up choosing Wilberforce due to it being the most affordable option for transportation. Even at a young age, Eugene could not pass up getting a good deal.
He began his journey at Wilberforce University in 1968. During college, Eugene was very popular on campus and earned the nickname "Rock" from his college classmates for his involvement as an avid wrestling team member. While studying at Wilberforce, he found the biggest treasure of them all, Ms. Christine McClorin of Lane ,South Carolina. They went on to date throughout their entire college career. In 1972, Eugene had many accomplishments. He graduated from Wilberforce University with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Management and moved to Philadelphia, PA, where his mother and siblings had relocated. He married the love of his life, Christine, on August 27, and in October, he became a father to his first son, Steven. In the years to come, they would have two additional children, Michael and David.
After making Philadelphia his home, Eugene embarked on a career in education, serving as a substitute teacher in the Philadelphia School District from 1972 to 1974. During this time, he imparted knowledge in commercial business and bookkeeping. Following this, he transitioned to a role at the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his professional journey. Notably, Eugene's dedication extended beyond his professional endeavors. In 1978, he joined the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and played an active role within the organization, assuming responsibilities such as shop steward and serving on the executive board until 2009.
His commitment to the union was evident through his regular attendance at state and yearly conferences, where he passionately advocated for the rights of union members. Eugene's engagement was not limited to the union, as he also maintained active involvement in the Wilberforce University Alumni Chapter, demonstrating unwavering loyalty to his alma mater. Furthermore, Eugene's profound devotion to his family was evident in his annual excursions to South Carolina and Florida, where he ensured cherished moments with his wife, children, and extended family. In the community, Eugene was a revered figure, assuming the role of a fatherly mentor to the neighborhood children. His welcoming nature was reflected in his open-door policy, where all who crossed the threshold of their home on Conlyn Street were greeted and nourished, thanks to the care of Christine.
Upon retiring, Eugene and Christine decided to spend their retirement in her hometown of Lane, South Carolina. During retirement, Eugene developed a love for cruising. At least twice a year, he would find himself cruising with Christine and family, visiting tropical locations. He spent his spare time researching topics of interest on the computer, doing crossword puzzles, and faithfully watching Jeopardy every night. He continued to enjoy family visits, especially around the holidays when family from Philadelphia and South Carolina would visit, especially his grandchildren. He loved being able to provide them with knowledge and wisdom and would spend hours talking to each of them during that time.
Eugene is predeceased by his parents, his wife, the late Christine Noland, his son Michael Noland, and his two sisters Johanna Noland and Sadie Noland. He is survived by his two sons, Steven (Patrice) Noland and David (Alexis) Noland of Philadelphia, PA; his Aunt Debbie Harris and Uncle George (Phyllis) Harris of Jacksonville, Florida; two brothers, William (Shirley) Noland and Anthony (Stephanie) of Philadelphia; three sisters, Patricia Pratt, Mary (Stanley) Nwachukwu, and Michelle Noland of Philadelphia; seven grandchildren: Shante Noland, Brandon Clark, Sharde Noland, Aaliyah Noland, Madison Noland, Deja Noland, and David Noland jr. of Philadelphia, PA; one great-grandchild, Aliza Clark of Philadelphia, PA; one special nephew, Courtney McClorin; four sisters-in-law, and one brother-in-law, and a host of family aud friends.
Eugene's journey from his early days in Trenton, Florida, to his time at Wilberforce University, and his impactful career in Philadelphia, is a testament to his unwavering work ethic and determination. His commitment to his family, community, and his active involvement in the union showcased his compassionate and caring nature. He believed in hard work and not taking shortcuts, and he wanted to ensure that his children and grandchildren all knew that the way to success was to have good work ethics, which they still carry to this day. His love for his family, his penchant for witty humor, and his ability to be a pillar of support for many will always be remembered. To say that his family and friends will miss him greatly is an understatement.
