Gregory attended the public school system of Williamsburg County, graduating with the Kingstree Senior High School class of 1980. He was a member of the Apostolic Faith Church in the Holywoods Community. Gregory became a professional painter at an early age and was a number one painter. He was employed by numerous employers including Hasco McAlister's Painting, Billy Scott's Painting, Tisdale's Painting and Hardware Floor, ELA Construction, Nucor Steel, and Dargin Construction.

There was never a dull moment being around him with his humorous ways. He loved entertaining his company by imitating almost any individual he ran across. He met the love of his life Jacqueline Peterson in 1986 and they were united in Holy Matrimony on May 20, 1988. This union was blessed with three children.

Gregory was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Katina McElveen.

Love ones left to cherish his memories includes his wife, Jacqueline P. McElveen of Kingstree, SC; two daughters, Sharon Peterson and Jaquettia McElveen of Kingstree SC; one son, Gregory Jamaal (Ashley) McElveen of Florence, SC; one grandson that he reared as his own, Jy'Resse Ransom of Kingstree, SC; nine additional grandchildren, Jes'Seria, Es'Sej, Jestini, Jes'Lyn, Jaaviare, Hailey, Bryson, Journey, and Davion; five siblings, Reverend "Mae" (Tony) Geddis of Columbia, SC, Evelyn (Samuel) McNellage, Ron (Meredith) McElveen, both of Kingstree, SC, Fernando (Shirley) McElveen of Lake City, SC, and Lisa Harmon of Kingstree, SC; his in-laws, Shirley (Earnest) Smith of Greeleyville, SC, Virgil (Geraldine) Burroughs of Sumter, SC, Roger (Dorothy) Burroughs of Philadelphia, PA, Kathleen (Wade) Brown of Sumter, SC, Pastor Donnell (Benet) Peterson, and Brenda (Joe) McAlister both of Columbia, SC; aunts and uncle, Delores (Anacletus) Wratee of Augusta, GA, Karolyn (Rev. Eli) Segars of Aiken, SC, Minister Leroy (Rose) McAlister, Curtis (Carol) McAlister, Leona McAlister, Bishop Joe C.
