Sarah Barr Smith peacefully departed this earthly life on April 18, 2025, in Brooklyn, New York. She was born on December 10, 1935, the eldest child of the late George and Isabella Barr. Sarah came from a proud lineage of third-generation family farmers. A native of Williamsburg County, South Carolina, Sarah attended Cooper's Academy and graduated from Tomlinson High School in Kingstree, South Carolina, in 1955. She was a devoted member of Bethesda United Methodist Church throughout her life.
Sarah began her professional career as a mental health therapist at Willowbrook State School in New York, later transferring to the Brooklyn Developmental Center. She dedicated over 30 years to her work in mental health services before retiring. After retirement, she returned to South Carolina to care for her father, embodying her lifelong commitment to family.
As a young woman, Sarah first relocated to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, before settling in Brooklyn, New York. Upon retirement, she returned to South Carolina, where she renewed her membership at Bethesda United Methodist Church. She served faithfully as a member of the United Women in Faith and as a Communion Board Stewardess.
Sarah was preceded in death by her beloved husband Jeremiah Smith, son, Robert Wilson, and two siblings, Carrie "Netta" Lewis and Robert Barr.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her sons, Jerry "Gerald" (Renee) Smith, and Maurice Coleman of Brooklyn, NY; one sister, Christine Lundy of Columbia, SC; two brothers, John Barr of Charleston, SC, and Joe Lee Barr of Kingstree, SC; daughter-in-law, Miranda Wilson of East Orange, NJ; cousin Gloria Burgess, who was like a sister; brother-in-law, Lucius (Sandra) Smith; grandchildren: Shakema (Benjamin) Quarles, Nneka Smith, Heru Smith, and Khalif Bowen; great grandchildren: Anaya, Amir and Aydin Quarles; Amar Jr. and Malachi Moody; Malia and Malachi Bowen; god daughter, Jayla Burgess; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and cherished friends.
